A road 15 feet wide was made from 3^ miles south of Tricomo to Tricomo<br />

and thence for 30^ miles to Yialoussa, having a maximum gradient of 1 in 12.<br />

All heavy portions, 19 miles altogether, metalled, temporary crossings (Irish<br />

bridges) formed at stream crossings. This is the first mention in Annual Reports<br />

of Irish bridges and they were adopted in this case with a view to being replaced<br />

by culverts when funds were available.<br />

The Yialoussa-Rizo Carpas section, 14| miles, was only opened 10 feet wide<br />

on account of the paucity of traffic as well as owing to the commencement of the<br />

harvest which had brought Relief work to a close. This section was recorded as<br />

incomplete and needing metal.<br />

Larnaca-Kophinou Road,—earthwork done during the past winter 1887-1888.<br />

Length of road 15J miles and 15 feet wide.<br />

Limassol Wine Roads,—Omodhos Road completed, the branch 4 miles long<br />

to Mallia and Arsos formed, maximum gradient 1 in 12, and ravine west of Mrillia<br />

spanned by a substantial bridge of two arches.<br />

Total length of the Limassol Wine Roads now open 34^ miles, of this, 20<br />

miles metalled, remaining length consists of compact dry soil.<br />

Ktima-Polis Road,—a length of 4 miles added during the year and 8| miles<br />

now open.<br />

Kelokethara Nahieh Road,—commenced in December, 1887 and 4| miles<br />

formed, the heavy portions metalled. It was deemed sufficient to make this road<br />

10 feet wide with a maximum gradient of 1 in 8.<br />

The expenditure on this work was £5,914, the cost per mile was therefore<br />

between £84 and £85.<br />

The following roads were maintained in good order :—<br />

Nicosia to Famagusta to Limassol to Kyrenia and to Kythrea, and from<br />

Larnaca to the Messaoria and to Limassol, besides several minor roads, or altogether<br />

about 250 miles had been repaired.<br />

A sum of £10 was granted by Government for supervision of free labour<br />

given by the villagers of Karmi to improve the track to their village from the<br />

top of St. Katharine's Pa^s past ,St. Hilarion Castle.<br />

It is recorded that the people of Zoopygi had undertaken to improve the<br />

track leading to their village also. Mr. Brown warmly recommended that every<br />

encouragement be given to villagei-s making such offers.<br />

This was the last annual report prepared by Mr. Brown.<br />

1888-9.<br />

The Blue-Book for the year 1888-1H89 contains the following expenditure<br />
