has consequently not been possible to maintain the roads in quite the same<br />
excellent condition as at the end of last year, though in the majority of cases they<br />
may be looked upon as equal to carrying properly the amount of traffic which they<br />
are called upon to bear.<br />
In the maintenance works done the chief item is the great improvement made<br />
to the surface of the Nicosia-Peristerona Road. This road originally surfaced<br />
with gravel sufficiently to carry the light traffic between Nicosia and Morphou<br />
was quite unable to bear the heavy work thrown on it by the cart traffic due to<br />
the opening of the road to Troodos and had for the last two years shown signs of<br />
breaking up. A large sum of money was granted for its proper repair and this<br />
road has now been remetalled almost throughout.<br />
A small improvement was made on the 19th mile on the Nicosia-Kophinou<br />
Road where a short diversion was carried out substituting a gradient of lin 17<br />
for that of 1 in 11 which previously existed and doing away with an unnecessary<br />
rise and fall.<br />
The Evrykhou-Troodos Road between Kakopetria and Karvouna saddle was<br />
surfaced with rock debris where necessary, and a great improvement was effected<br />
as the surface of the road formed from the side cutting was breaking up and had<br />
become in dry wheather, very dusty, and in wet, muddy.<br />
The following table gives the mileage of the Main Roads maintained during<br />
this year with sums allotted to each.<br />
This expenditure works out at the rate of £6 3 1 per mile.<br />
