CARRIAGE ROADS.
Connection between Famagusta and Varoshia.
Extension of the Nicosia-Nisou Road to a point somewhere about a mile or
two beyond Korno.
The opening of the Nicosia-Deftera Road nearly as far as Lakatamia.
The completion of the Ktima-Polis Road for a mile or two beyond Tsada.
The Military Roads are shown to be the same as in previous years but it is
open to doubt if the Mathiati Road was under maintenance at that period.
The Bridle Roads appear to be as formerly with the addition of that between
Nicosia and Ay. Epictetos by way of Voeno or Sykhari and Kako Skala to the
west of Buffavento.
The " partially-made " roads appear to be the same, but it is open to doubt
if they were still maintained, and in fact the absence of any reference to many of
them in the returns of expenditure appearing in the Blue-Book would appear to
indicate that they had been abandoned for some time.
In Mr. Brown's Annual Report dated G.E. 225 of 18th July, 1887, for the
year ending 31st March, 1887, the following is recorded :—
The writer records having driven from Nicosia to Omodhos, a distance of
97 miles, by way, apparently, of Larnaca, Kophinou and Limassol and having
found the roads in good condition throughout.
The cost of constructing these Wine Roads was about £200 per mile.
Nicosia-Limassol Road,—7^ miles of Mule Track from Nisou beyond Korno
converted into a carriage road, having a width of 15 feet. "There are 19 miles
" of Carriage Road made from Nicosia to Korno and 19 miles from Limassol to
" the Mari Bridge, but there still remains a gap of about 16 miles between these
"two sections."— Vide report.
Ktima-Polis Road.—In January, 1887, relief works were started in Paphos
with £600 for the inauguration of this undertaking. The daily rate of pay was
7c.p. * but this sum failed to attract a sufficient number of labourers to allow
the whole amouut to be spent before the close of the financial year and it is
