Besides these there are the roads maintained from what is known as the<br />

Public Loan Fund, and of which there are 56*75 miles. The expenditure on these<br />

will be rendered subsequently. The total number of miles maintained therefore<br />

during the current year amounts to 598*75 miles.<br />

A scrutiny of the foregoing statement will show to what extent the rate of<br />

maintenance per mile has been reduced. Taking as a specimen, probably the best,<br />

the Nicosia-Larnaca Road it is found that the annual expenditure during the past<br />

ten years has been as follows :—<br />

The rate of maintenance has therefore been reduced during the past ten years<br />

to less than one-half. From 1898-1901, that is to say, from the time the present<br />

maintenance system was brought into operation, the reduction has been from £854<br />

to £580 or nearly 33 per cent. The fluctuation in the figures will show that this<br />

arises from no mere accident nor is it to be entirely accounted for by the prevailing<br />

distress and the present low prices of labour for, as will be seen during the two<br />

years previous to this, the cost of maintenance was lower. A recent inspection of<br />

this road convinces me of its excellent condition, a condition not to be surpassed<br />

by any piece of road of similar length in any of the country districts of England.<br />
