The expenditure on these will be rendered subsequently. The total number of miles maintained therefore during the current year amounts to 598*75 miles. A scrutiny of the foregoing statement will show to what extent the rate of maintenance per mile has been reduced. Taking as a specimen, probably the best, the Nicosia-Larnaca Road it is found that the annual expenditure during the past ten years has been as follows :— 1893-1894 . . . _ . £1,199 3 3 1894-1895 998 10 3 1895-1896 899 10 3 1896-1897 -. From 1898-1901, that is to say, from the time the present maintenance system was brought into operation, the reduction has been from £854 to £580 or nearly 33 per cent. The fluctuation in the figures will show that this arises from no mere accident nor is it to be entirely accounted for by the prevailing distress and the present low prices of labour for, as will be seen during the two years previous to this, the cost of maintenance was lower. A recent inspection of this road convinces me of its excellent condition, a condition not to be surpassed by any piece of road of similar length in any of the country districts of England. It might be inferred from these figures that economy had been effected at the cost of the traveller but far from this being the case the wayfarer gets over the country with greater ease and far more confort than he did six years ago while, owing to the improvement in the condition of surface journeys, now occupy from 25 to 30 per cent, less time than they used to. Carriages and carts are annually increasing in number, the rates for transport are being lowered, and a more striking proof than all is the improved style of carriage and diligence now to be seen on the Roads, and the smarter and better conditioned animals drawing them. The Divisional Engineers have exercised great care and given much attention to enforcing the present system and the results are greatly to their credit. In the Eastern Division whereas the contraction of roads is not attended with so many difficulties as elsewhere, the maintenance is not so easy by reason of the absence of suitable material for road-making and stone for metal. Great credit is therefore due to the Executive Officer for the state of the roads in his charge. On the other hand in the Western Division good stone is as a general rule within easy reach of the Main Roads in almost every part though the country is more broken up and there are more obstacles to road-making. Since the appointment of an Executive Officer in charge of the Western Division the roads under his care have shewn great improvement and this is most marked in the case of the Limassol-Paphos Road the condition of which is excellent. Among the more important works carried out in connection with the existing Main Roads, the following may be noted :— The metalling and completion of the diversion of the Nicosia-Kyrenia Road between Orta-Keuy and Aghirda through Geunyeli, the consequence of which is that carriage drivers report that they can perform the journey betwen Nicosia and Kyrenia in an hour less than formerly. This, in refutation of the statement freely made when the diversion was commenced, that the work was unnecessary and unjustifiable. A further and final improvement was carried out between Aghirda and St. Catherine's Pass by the insertion of another new piece of road, on a gradient of 1 in 17 in substitution of those of 1 in 7 and 1 in 9 on the old road now eliminated. This road from being one of the worst, most difficult, and steepest in the Island is now one of the best. The Nicosia-Morphou Road was improved between Akachia and Peristerona by the elimination of gradients of 1 in 7 and 1 in 11 and the substitution of those of 1 in 15, ΚΥΠΡΙΑΚΗ ΒΙΒΛΙΟΘΗΚΗ
