In the same document it was recorded that the following roads had been<br />

long since abandoned.<br />

Larnaca to Mari via Zigi.<br />

Larnaca to Famagusta via Ormidhia.<br />

Kythrea-Tricomo Road with the exception of 7 miles which had been constructed<br />

during the year under review.<br />

Peristerona (or Astromeriti) to Lefka via Elaea.<br />

There were a number of extraordinary works done on several of the roads<br />

the cost of which was included in the sums spent upon or classified as maintenance.<br />

The expenditure on existing roads was £5,184 9 2 including £293 0 8<br />

contributed by the Agricultural Bank, the cost of maintenance being therefore<br />

£11 17 5 per mile.<br />

The expenditure on new roads was £2,852 4 6 including £81 17 0 contributed<br />

by the Agricultural Bank, the cost of construction being therefore £137 9 1 per<br />

mile.<br />

There was however no established system which governed either the<br />

maintenance or the construction of roads, and there is no reason to believe that<br />

the work done in connection with the former was anything more than superficial<br />

repairs, instance the fact that no consolidation was effected in the case of newly<br />

spread metal.<br />
