COST ACTION E22: Environmental optimisation of wood protection Working Group 3: INNOVATIONS Scope: Application of modified wood, heat treatment, insect growth regulators, new biocides, non-biocidal treatments, resins and oils Scale-up and exploitation of non-toxic treatments • Anoxic procedure for controlling biodeterioration in fine art • Introduction of environmentally friendly preparations for preservation of wooden cultural heritage objects (Slovenian - Croatian project) Insect growth regulators • Co-normative research on laboratory test methods for new generations of active ingredients in wood preservatives against wood destroying insects – project proposal with some European countries (initiated by BAM, Germany) Scale-up and exploitation of chemical modification systems • Wood modification, the novel base, providing materials with superior qualities without toxic residue – originated and co-ordinated by SHR Timber research (Wageningen, The Netherlands) • Modified wood and its compatibility with surface coatings New chemical wood preservatives: • Metal carboxylates – synthesis and characterisation • Systemic protection of wood with boron containing biocides and surface coatings • Fungal enzymatic wood decay – use of enzyme inhibitors as fungicides 146
4. CONCLUSIONS COST ACTION E22: Environmental optimisation of wood protection The scope of the COST Action E22 is of considerable relevance and interest in Slovenia, with some of the scientific areas being the subject of current active work at our organisation and in cooperation with relevant research groups in Europe The key themes are: • carrying out chemical syntheses and chemical characterization of synthesized fungicidal compounds • testing the antifungal effectiveness of substances and determining bio-effective life of biocides and their compatibility with surface coatings • studying of fungal degradation of wood and selective enzymatic degradation of wood by white-rot fungi • studying of copper-tolerance of brown rot fungi and bioremediation of preservative-treated wood waste • anoxic procedure for controlling biodeterioration and introduction of environmentally friendly preparations for preservation of wooden cultural heritage objects • wood modification and its compatibility with surface coatings. 5. ANNEXES Annex 1 lists the Organisations who responded to the request for information, together with details about their contact persons and co-ordinates. Annex 2 summarises the activities in the particular Working Groups of E22 using the standard template. 147
