4. CONCLUSIONS
COST ACTION E22: Environmental optimisation of wood protection
The scope of the COST Action E22 is of considerable relevance and interest to Finland.
There is active work ongoing in many of the topic areas mainly at VTT Building Technology
but also in other organisations.
The key themes are:
• developing optimum protective treatments with predicted service life
• to study decay mechanisms in order to develop new reliable wood protective
treatments
• scientific basis for quantifying biodegradability
• scaling up of wood modifying methods to industrial level
• understanding of physical and chemical changes in modified wood

Annex 1 lists the Organisations and their contact persons, which mainly are responsible
for the research work in the scope of COST Action E22.
Annex 2 summarises the activities in the particular Working Groups of E22 using the
