Born 28/5/1868, married 30/4/1897, Anna Ev<strong>an</strong>geline (d. 2/1/1941) daughter <strong>of</strong> D<strong>an</strong>iel Cloete <strong>of</strong> Montebello, Newl<strong>an</strong>ds, Cape Town. Maj-Gen Northey's 3rd daughter, Isobel Fr<strong>an</strong>ces married Major Oliver Hamilton Newton,. MC & two bars, <strong>of</strong> Salisbury (Harare). Or, on a fess azure between three p<strong>an</strong>thers stat<strong>an</strong>t proper, semée <strong>of</strong> estoiles argent, a p<strong>an</strong>sy <strong>of</strong> the first between two lilies <strong>of</strong> the third. (BLG, 1952) OATES (formerly <strong>of</strong> GESTINGTHORPE HALL) Fr<strong>an</strong>cis Oates, FRGS. Born 6/4/1840. Died <strong>of</strong> a fever in the interior <strong>of</strong> South Africa on 5/2/1875 while on a journey <strong>of</strong> exploration <strong>an</strong>d natural history research. The scientific <strong>an</strong>d other results <strong>of</strong> his work were published posthumously in a work entitled "Matabele L<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d the Victoria Falls". 2nd son <strong>of</strong> Edward Oates <strong>of</strong> Me<strong>an</strong>woodside, nr. Leeds. The famous Capt. Laurence Edward Grace Oates, 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, <strong>of</strong> Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition was his nephew - the elder son <strong>of</strong> his younger brother, William Edward. Born 10/3/1885, married, 1923, Maud D'Oyly, daughter <strong>of</strong> the late Lt. Col. Alfred St.George Hamersley <strong>of</strong> Ryecote Park, Oxfordshire. Son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Frederick James Oliph<strong>an</strong>t, MA,Vicar <strong>of</strong> Woking. Gules, three crescents argent within a bordure counter compony <strong>of</strong> the second <strong>an</strong>d first.
