HOSTE Henry Fr<strong>an</strong>cis Hoste, son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. W.P. Hoste <strong>of</strong> St<strong>an</strong>hoe Rectory, Norfolk (nr. S<strong>an</strong>dringham). The Rev. Hoste later became De<strong>an</strong> <strong>of</strong> St. Paul's Cathedral. Of the same family as Admiral Sir William Hoste who was a famous naval <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the Napoleonic Wars. "Skipper" Hoste, as he was known, was <strong>an</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the Pioneer Corps <strong>an</strong>d after arriving in Fort Salisbury built <strong>an</strong> encampment at the foot <strong>of</strong> the Kopje. Azure, a bull's head caboshed argent winged <strong>an</strong>d armed Or <strong>an</strong>d, as <strong>an</strong> honourable augmentation, in chief a naval crown pendent therefrom by a ribbon a representation <strong>of</strong> the gold medal given by the Prince Regent to Adm. Sir William Hoste, 1st Baronet for his distinguished conduct on March 13, 1811, subscribed "Lissa". Killed at the Battle <strong>of</strong> Omdurm<strong>an</strong> in 1898. Younger brother <strong>of</strong> the 10th Earl <strong>of</strong> Carlisle.
