GLOSSARY OF HERALDIC TERMS Following are some of the more common terms used in blazoning (i.e. describing) the arms on a shield. Addorsed back to back. Affronté facing the observer. Annulet a ring. Argent silver, usually shown as white. Armed of the claws, horns, talons and teeth of Animals. Azure blue. Barbed refers to the sepals of the heraldic rose. Barry divided horizontally in alternate tinctures. Base the lower part of a shield. Baton a narrow bend couped at the ends. Bend a broad band from top left to bottom right. Bendlet a narrow bend. Bend Sinister a broad band from top right to bottom left. Bezant a gold roundel. Billet an oblong rectangle. Bleu Celeste sky-blue. Bordure a border round the edge of a shield. Brock the badger. Caboshed animal's head affronté showing no neck. Canton rectangle in dexter chief smaller than a quarter. Chaplet a circular wreath of leaves and flowers. Charge any object on a shield. Chequy divided into checkered squares. Chevron a broad inverted "V". Chevronel a narrow chevron. Chief the upper portion of the shield. Cinquefoil a figure with five petals or leaves. Combattant of animals, face to face. Compony a single row of rectangles alternately tinctured. Cornish Chough a black bird similar to the crow. Cotise a narrow band on either side of a bend or fess. Counterchanged with alternating tinctures on either side of a partition line. Couped cut off in a straight line. Courant running. VII
