cuts extending to the full depth <strong>of</strong> the surface<br />

course.<br />

7.7.4 All loose <strong>and</strong> crumbling fractions shall be<br />

removed from the bottom <strong>and</strong> sides <strong>of</strong> the trench.<br />

The bottom <strong>and</strong> sides shall be completely painted<br />

with tack coat.<br />

7.7.5 The defective surfacing shall be replaced<br />

with the specified surface course material. It shall<br />

be placed in the trenches in lifts <strong>of</strong> about 50 mm<br />

each which shall be compacted separately with<br />

approved mechanical or h<strong>and</strong> tampers as specified<br />

in Clauses 7.15 <strong>and</strong>/or 7.16.<br />

7.7.6 At the time <strong>of</strong> compaction, the mixture shall<br />

be at the specified temperature. The final layer<br />

shall be laid so as not to leave a concave finish<br />

below the general surface after thorough<br />

compaction by rolling.<br />

7.7.7 All loose material shall be removed from<br />

any potholes, the bottom <strong>and</strong> sides <strong>of</strong> the<br />

depressions painted with tack coat <strong>and</strong> then the<br />

potholes backfilled, compacted <strong>and</strong> finished in<br />

accordance with sub-Clauses 7.7.5 <strong>and</strong> 7.7.6.<br />

(NOTE. Further guidance on making good is given in DE<br />

Functional St<strong>and</strong>ard 06, “Guide to Airfield Pavement<br />

Maintenance”.)<br />

7.8 TRANSPORTING PLANT MIXTURES<br />

7.8.1 The plant mixtures shall be transported<br />

without delay to the laying sites from the mixing<br />

plant or from hot storage bins taking care to prevent<br />

segregation. The vehicles shall be double sheeted<br />

during transit <strong>and</strong> while waiting to prevent loss <strong>of</strong><br />

heat, contamination <strong>and</strong> wetting. All vehicles shall<br />

be mechanically sound <strong>and</strong> shall be suitable for the<br />

spreading equipment in use <strong>and</strong> shall have<br />

insulated bodies.<br />

7.8.2 The use <strong>of</strong> water or proprietary products on<br />

the surfaces <strong>of</strong> the transporting vehicles to facilitate<br />

discharge shall be strictly regulated to the absolute<br />

minimum. If the Project Manager considers that<br />

contamination <strong>of</strong> the mixtures is occurring, the<br />

vehicle shall be thoroughly cleaned out to his<br />

satisfaction before being used again. The use <strong>of</strong><br />

diesel oil, dust, s<strong>and</strong> or other fine particles is<br />

prohibited.<br />

7.8.3 The temperature <strong>of</strong> the load in every<br />

transporting vehicle shall be checked in accordance<br />

with BS EN 12697-13 whilst discharging from the<br />

delivery lorry into the paver hopper. If the<br />

temperature <strong>of</strong> any batch is below the minimum<br />

delivery temperature specified in Clause 4.6 for <strong>Hot</strong><br />

<strong>Rolled</strong> <strong>Asphalt</strong>, Clause 5.3 for <strong>Asphalt</strong> <strong>Concrete</strong><br />

(<strong>Macadam</strong>) or Clause 6.5 for Pervious <strong>Macadam</strong>,<br />

the load shall be rejected <strong>and</strong> shall be removed<br />

from site immediately. If the delivery temperature <strong>of</strong><br />

Pervious <strong>Macadam</strong> is greater than 100 °C when<br />

160/220 paving grade bitumen has been used, or<br />

greater than 120 °C if modified 160/220 paving<br />

grade bitumen has been used, the load shall be<br />

rejected <strong>and</strong> shall be removed from site<br />

immediately.<br />

7.8.4 Each delivery <strong>of</strong> mixed material to the<br />

contract works, whether batched on-site or <strong>of</strong>f-site,<br />

shall be accompanied by a delivery ticket giving the<br />

following details:<br />

• Delivery ticket number;<br />

• Vehicle registration number;<br />

• Material type <strong>and</strong> mix classification;<br />

• Penetration grade <strong>of</strong> bitumen used; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Quantity.<br />

For material batched <strong>of</strong>f-site, the delivery ticket shall<br />

also give the following details:<br />

• Customer name <strong>and</strong> Delivery site number;<br />

• Source <strong>of</strong> supply;<br />

• Date <strong>and</strong> time loaded; <strong>and</strong><br />

• Date <strong>and</strong> time delivered.<br />

7.8.5 Copies <strong>of</strong> the delivery tickets shall be<br />

passed to the Project Manager for his retention.<br />

7.9 TACK AND BOND COAT<br />

APPLICATION<br />

7.9.1 The type <strong>of</strong> tack or bond coat to be used for<br />

the particular material being laid is as specified in<br />

Clause 3.6.<br />

7.9.2 Tack <strong>and</strong> bond coats shall be applied not<br />

more than 48 h in advance <strong>of</strong> surfacing. The target<br />

rate <strong>of</strong> application shall be in accordance with<br />

BS 594987. Tack <strong>and</strong> bond coat may be applied to<br />

damp surfaces but ponded or st<strong>and</strong>ing water shall<br />

be removed as specified in Clauses 7.5 <strong>and</strong> 7.6.<br />

7.9.3 Tack <strong>and</strong> bond coats shall be applied<br />

uniformly, free <strong>of</strong> streaks <strong>and</strong> blobs in accordance<br />

with BS 434-2 by mobile mechanical tank-spraying<br />

units complying with BS 3136-2. The tack or bond<br />

coat shall be allowed to ‘break’ completely before<br />

laying proceeds. Where the size or shape <strong>of</strong> an<br />

area to be sprayed precludes mobile operation,<br />

pressure spraying equipment or h<strong>and</strong>-spraying<br />

complying in accordance with BS 434-2 will be<br />

permitted with the approval <strong>of</strong> the Project Manager.<br />
