Specification 12 <strong>Hot</strong> <strong>Rolled</strong> <strong>Asphalt</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Macadam</strong> for Airfields 7 Plant <strong>and</strong> Workmanship<br />

with Clause 7.2. The covers on the delivery lorry<br />

shall only be rolled back sufficiently to discharge<br />

sufficient material for immediate use. At the<br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> the Project Manager, Pervious<br />

<strong>Macadam</strong> may be laid by a small width screed<br />

paver where support on either side <strong>of</strong> the French<br />

drain is deemed sufficient. Alternatively, Pervious<br />

<strong>Macadam</strong> shall be spread with hot shovels carefully<br />

to avoid contamination from adjacent vegetable<br />

growth or other foreign material. It shall be spread<br />

portion by portion in a single uniform layer along the<br />

length <strong>of</strong> the drain to the required width, <strong>and</strong><br />

levelled <strong>of</strong>f with hot h<strong>and</strong> rakes by skilled operators<br />

to give the correct shape <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile after<br />

compaction.<br />

7.17.2 The Pervious <strong>Macadam</strong> shall be compacted<br />

by a smooth wheeled t<strong>and</strong>em roller <strong>of</strong> mass not<br />

exceeding 3 tonnes having a roller width not<br />

exceeding that <strong>of</strong> the French Drain. No vibration<br />

shall be permitted. Pervious <strong>Macadam</strong> shall be laid<br />

within 3 h <strong>of</strong> manufacture.<br />

7.18 LONGITUDINAL LANE JOINTS,<br />

GENERAL<br />

Longitudinal joints in surfacing materials shall be<br />

constructed in such a position that they are at least<br />

600 mm horizontally away from any longitudinal<br />

joints in the underlying material. The longitudinal<br />

lane joints shall be vertical in straight lines which<br />

are continuous for the full length <strong>of</strong> the pavement,<br />

or in smooth curves around bends.<br />

7.19 LONGITUDINAL LANE JOINTS IN<br />

MATERIALS OTHER THAN<br />

PERVIOUS MACADAM<br />

7.19.1 The exposed vertical edges <strong>of</strong> the<br />

longitudinal lane joints in the surfacing materials<br />

shall be carefully cut back <strong>and</strong> trimmed to firm<br />

material in the compacted lane, or for a minimum <strong>of</strong><br />

one half <strong>and</strong> a times the layer thickness, whichever<br />

is the greater, <strong>and</strong> all loose material arising from<br />

this operation shall be removed from the pavement<br />

before the cut edge is painted.<br />

7.19.2 Edge rolling shall only be used as an<br />

alternative to cutting back if it can be demonstrated<br />

during the trials to the Project Manager that<br />

satisfactory st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> compaction, surface/joint<br />

finish <strong>and</strong> adhesion can be achieved.<br />

(NOTE. Cores should be taken for test at these joints to<br />

demonstrate good adhesion <strong>and</strong> bulk density within the<br />

specified limits.)<br />

7.19.3 Cutting back <strong>and</strong> trimming will not be<br />

required when two or more spreading units operate<br />

in echelon in close proximity, permitting adjacent<br />

lanes to be continuously compacted before the<br />

material around the joint between the lanes falls<br />

below the compaction temperature specified in<br />

Clause 4.6 for <strong>Hot</strong> <strong>Rolled</strong> <strong>Asphalt</strong> or Clause 5.3 for<br />

<strong>Asphalt</strong> <strong>Concrete</strong> (<strong>Macadam</strong>).<br />

7.19.4 After cutting back <strong>and</strong> trimming, the<br />

exposed vertical edges <strong>of</strong> the longitudinal lane<br />

joints shall be thoroughly cleaned <strong>of</strong> all adherent<br />

material <strong>and</strong> shall then be painted with a uniform<br />

thickness <strong>of</strong> bitumen just ahead <strong>of</strong> the spreading<br />

unit laying the adjacent lane. Painting shall<br />

completely <strong>and</strong> uniformly cover the exposed edge<br />

for its full depth. Excess material to the top <strong>and</strong><br />

base <strong>of</strong> the joints, streakiness <strong>and</strong> blobs shall be<br />

avoided.<br />

7.19.5 On completion, the joints shall present the<br />

same texture as the remainder <strong>of</strong> the surface <strong>and</strong><br />

the accuracy <strong>of</strong> the surface across the joints shall<br />

meet the criteria specified in Clause 7.25.<br />

7.19.6 When laying during cool windy weather, a<br />

joint heater may be used subject to the discretion <strong>of</strong><br />

the Project Manager.<br />

7.20 TRANSVERSE JOINTS<br />

7.20.1 Transverse joints are required at the end <strong>of</strong><br />

a day’s work <strong>and</strong> following any interruption in laying<br />

which prevents continuity <strong>of</strong> rolling at, or above, the<br />

specified minimum temperature. Transverse joints<br />

shall be formed at right angles to the longitudinal<br />

joints <strong>and</strong> shall be vertical.<br />

7.20.2 The exposed vertical edges <strong>of</strong> the<br />

transverse joints <strong>of</strong> all layers shall be cut back for at<br />

least 300 mm <strong>and</strong> trimmed. All loose material<br />

arising from this operation shall be removed from<br />

the pavement <strong>and</strong> the underlying surface cleaned.<br />

The exposed joint edges shall then be cleaned <strong>and</strong><br />

painted with bitumen as specified in Clause 7.19<br />

immediately before the laying <strong>of</strong> the lane continues.<br />

7.20.3 On completion, the joints shall present the<br />

same texture as the remainder <strong>of</strong> the surface <strong>and</strong><br />

the accuracy <strong>of</strong> the surface across the joints shall<br />

meet the criteria specified in Clause 7.25.<br />
