It has heen supposed lately that coral is made<br />

by small insects, but this is an error ; polypes live<br />

in coral as worms in wood, but these don't make<br />

the trees nor the other the plant. Coral is to be<br />

reduced to fine powder, by grinding it on a marble<br />

; and then it is given to stop purgings, to<br />

destroy acid humours in the stomach, and to<br />

sweeten the blood.<br />

There are several sorts of white oral, whichi<br />

have been sometimes used in medicine ; but all allow<br />

the red to be better, so that they are not kept<br />

Coralline. Coralluia.<br />

A LITTLE sea plant frequent about our own<br />

toasts and of a somewhat stony texture, but not<br />

like the red or white coral. It grows to three<br />

inches high, and is very much branched, and young<br />

shoots arise also from different parts of the branches :<br />

there are no leaves on it, nor visible flowers, but<br />

the whole plant is composed of short joints. It is<br />

commonly of a greenish or reddish colour, but<br />

when it has been thrown a time upon the shores, it<br />

bleaches and becomes white ; it naturally grows<br />

to shells and pebbles. The best is the freshest, n*t<br />

that which is bleached.<br />

It is given to children as a remedy against worms ;<br />

a scruple or half a dram for a dose.<br />
