what hairy, and of a dusky colour.<br />

The seed is used ; and it is best given in powder.<br />

It operates powerfully by urine, and it is<br />

good against stoppages of the menses, and in the<br />

gravel and colics, arising from that cause. It<br />

is also recommended against the dropsy and jaun-<br />

dice.<br />

Wild Parsnep. Pastinaca sylvestris.<br />

A wild plant, common about our road sides.<br />

It is three feet high. The stalk is straight, upright,<br />

round, striated, and yellowish. The leaves<br />

are composed of many broad divisions, and resem-<br />

ble those of the garden parsnep, but they are smaller.<br />

The ilowers are little and yellow : they grow<br />

at the<br />

tops of the stalks, in large, rounded tufts, and the<br />

seeds are flat, and of an oval figure. The root is<br />

long, white, and well tasted.<br />

The root is to be used. A strong decoction of<br />

it works by urine, and all opens obstructions. It is<br />

and will<br />

good against the gravel and the jaundice,<br />

bring down the menses.<br />

Pavana Shrub. Pavana<br />

A shrubby plant of the East Indies, of a<br />

beautiful, as well as singular aspect. It is six or<br />

seven feet high. The stem is woody, firm, and<br />

naked almost to the top. The leaves grow upon<br />

long foot stalks, and they all rise nearly together,<br />

at the upper part of the stem :<br />

they are large, of<br />

a rounded figure, and divided at the edges pretty<br />

deeply into several parts : their colour is a deep<br />

green. The Ilowers are small, and of a greenish<br />

colour. The fruit is of the bin'ne^s of a hazle
