A tretty wild plant, about our waste places and<br />

farm-yards ; conspicuous for its leaves,<br />

if not so for<br />

its flower. It grows two feet high ; and the stalk<br />

is round, erect, very firm and strong, and not much<br />

branched. The leaves are moderately largo, and<br />

most beautifully divided into numerous small seg-<br />

ments, long and narrow ; they stand irregularly<br />

upon the staiks. The Mowers are small and yellow ;<br />

they stand in a kind of spikes at the stalks. They<br />

The seeds are the part used : they nre<br />

collected when just ripe, and boiled whole.<br />

decoction cures the bloody flux, and is good againbt<br />

Flower Gentle. Amaranthus.<br />

A garden flower. There are many kinds of<br />

it; but that used in medicine is the large one<br />

with the drooping purple spike. It grows to four<br />

feet high. The stalk is firm, lound, and channel-<br />

led, green sometimes, but often red. The leaves<br />

are oblong and broad even at the edges, and pointed<br />

at the ends : they are very large, and are often<br />

tinged with red. The flowers are purple, and<br />

they grow in long beautiful spikes hanging downwards.<br />

The flowers are the part used. They are to be<br />

gathered when not quite<br />

They are good against purging and overflowing<br />

of the menses in powder or decoction.
