Full cause there is-But well know'st thou my love<br />

For noble Godwin, noble now indeed !<br />

For he hath rank and titles, pomp and friends,<br />

The mightiest in the court. But he, alas !<br />

Already his poor forest maiden scorns,<br />

Deserts his Edith for some courtly dame,<br />

Whose rank and dowry promise large increase<br />

Of wealth and honour.<br />

EVORA.<br />

Noble, call you him ?<br />

Out on his nobleness ! a scurvy groom,<br />

A serf-born drudge, a poor swine-monger, whom<br />

7 scarce had deigned to bless ! O could I see him,<br />

I'd lower his proud nobility ; Fd tell him,<br />

I must not hear thee speak of Godwin thus.<br />

I deemed his truth firm as the eternal hills ;<br />

And is hope mine, though round his brow the clouds<br />

Of falsehood darkly lour, that honour's sun<br />

Will on his loftiness break forth, and make him<br />

Bright with its glory, as in days gone by.<br />

I would not he should learn my altered state,<br />

Till I have proved his heart.<br />
