My honoured father in his wild despair,<br />

As he beside the trembling princess kneels,<br />

Invoking Heaven's dread curses on my<br />

He on the ground flings<br />

his uprooted locks<br />

In bitter madness ! Agony<br />

of soul<br />

head !<br />

The flashing of his dark eye dims with tears,<br />

As rain and lightnings mingle. Now his hand<br />

The glittering dagger grasps ; he calls on me,<br />

On me his son, but calls in vain, to save him.<br />

Deep in his heart the horrid steel is plunged !<br />

'Tis I who strike the blow ! My brain's on fire !<br />

His blood streams o'er the altar, and from thence<br />

Will it cry out against me for revenge !<br />

Revenge ! revenge on a foul parricide !<br />

[Edgar falls,<br />

Elfilia shriek* and sinks beside him.<br />

Enter Roderick and several Robbers, the Peasants<br />

scream with terror and run off. Roderick mo-<br />

tions the Robbers, who seize Elfilia.<br />

ELFILIA.<br />

Awake, my Edgar ! Fiends, let go your hold ;<br />

Ye shall not tear me from him.<br />

save ! hears me not.<br />

Save me, my Edgar, He<br />

Ah, then farewell, for ever and for ever !<br />

[Faints in the arms of the Robbers, who bear her<br />

off. Roderick stands in a triumphant attitude<br />

over the fallen Edgar.<br />
