THE DEVOTED ONE.<br />

Beside his daughter's death-bed, whom all else<br />

Had left to<br />

perish. Cast them on the fire.<br />

FIFTH WITCH.<br />

I came from where that dull-eyed demon reigns,<br />

Grim Bigotry, o'er all a saintly land<br />

Of furious priests. There by the pile<br />

I stood<br />

Of one, who to a pillar hung in chains,<br />

Begirt with living<br />

fire : a Jew was he<br />

Who would not yield the faith his fathers taught,<br />

And a new creed embrace. In tortures long<br />

He writhing lingered, and as o'er the coals<br />

He grinned a blackened cinder, still there came<br />

A dismal hollow voice from that dark mass,<br />

Cursing<br />

the fell tormentors. From the ashes<br />

I raked the fragments of his flame-bleached bones,<br />

And, with a Christian infant's yet warm blood<br />

Baptizing them, I on our May-fire cast<br />

The magic relics.<br />

CHORUS OF WITCHES AROUND THE FIRE.<br />

On it fling all charms of might,<br />

'Tis the witches' holy night.<br />

Haste, ye spirits, from the flood,<br />

From the war-field dyed in blood ;<br />

From the caves that lie below,<br />

Where the fires eternal glow ;<br />

From the place where Murder stands<br />

Smiling, with his gory hands,<br />

On his victim ; from the waves<br />

Where the eddying whirlpool raves,<br />

Closing o'er the sea-boy's head,<br />

As he sinks to th' ocean dead ;
