V, l-viii.] LOVE U.VQUENCHABLE 29<br />

has just returned froni tending his flock in <strong>the</strong> night,<br />

<strong>and</strong> his hair is wet with <strong>the</strong> dew. <strong>The</strong> bride coyly<br />

excuses herself, on <strong>the</strong> plea that she has laid aside her<br />

mantle <strong>and</strong> washed her feet ; as though it would vex<br />

her to put her feet to <strong>the</strong> ground again. This is but<br />

<strong>the</strong> playful reluctance <strong>of</strong> love ; for no sooner is her<br />

beloved really lost than she undertakes <strong>the</strong> greatest<br />

trouble in <strong>the</strong> search for him. When he puts in his<br />

vanished lover, <strong>and</strong> calls him by name ; but <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

no answer. She goes out to seek for him in <strong>the</strong> streets,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> watchmen cuff <strong>and</strong> bruise her, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Returning from <strong>the</strong> distressing recollection <strong>of</strong> her<br />

dream to <strong>the</strong> present condition <strong>of</strong> affairs, <strong>the</strong> sorrowful<br />

Shulammite adjures <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem to tell<br />

her if <strong>the</strong>y have found her love.^ <strong>The</strong>y respond by<br />

asking, what is her beloved more than any o<strong>the</strong>r
