THE SONG OF SOLOMON<br />

In this figurative way <strong>the</strong> true lover expresses his con-<br />

tempt for <strong>the</strong> monstrous harem at <strong>the</strong> palace. He is<br />

content with his one ewe lamb ; nay, she is more to him<br />

than all <strong>Solomon</strong>'s bevy <strong>of</strong> beauties ; even <strong>the</strong>se ladies<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> court are now constrained to praise <strong>the</strong> noble<br />

qualities <strong>of</strong> his bride.<br />

<strong>Solomon</strong>'s expression <strong>of</strong> awe for <strong>the</strong> terrible purity<br />

<strong>and</strong> constancy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shulammite is repeated/ <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n<br />

she tells <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> her capture.^ She had gone<br />

down to <strong>the</strong> nut garden to look at <strong>the</strong> fresh green on<br />

<strong>the</strong> plants, <strong>and</strong> to see whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> vines were budding<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> pomegranates putting forth <strong>the</strong>ir lovely scarlet<br />

blossoms, when suddenly, <strong>and</strong> all unawares, she was<br />

pounced upon by <strong>the</strong> king's people <strong>and</strong> whisked away<br />

in one <strong>of</strong> his chariots. It is a vivid scene, <strong>and</strong>, like<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r scenes in this poem, <strong>the</strong> background <strong>of</strong> it is <strong>the</strong><br />

lovely aspect <strong>of</strong> nature in early spring.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Shulammite now seems to be attempting a retreat,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ladies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> court bid her return ; <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

see <strong>the</strong> performance <strong>of</strong>, a favourite dance, known as<br />

" <strong>The</strong> Dance <strong>of</strong> Mahanaim." ^ <strong>The</strong>reupon we have a<br />

description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> performer, as she was seen during<br />

<strong>the</strong> convolutions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dance, dressed in a transparent<br />

garment <strong>of</strong> red gauze,— perhaps such as is represented<br />

in Pompeian frescoes,—so that her person could be com-<br />

pared to pale wheat surrounded by crimson anemones.*<br />

It is quite against <strong>the</strong> tenor <strong>of</strong> her conduct to suppose<br />

that <strong>the</strong> modest country girl would degrade herself by<br />

ministering to <strong>the</strong> amusement <strong>of</strong> a corrupt court in this<br />

shameless manner. It is more reasonable to conclude<br />

' vi. lo.<br />

^ Vers. II, 12.<br />

8 vi. 13. This is obscured in <strong>the</strong> Authorised Version.<br />

* vii. 1-9.
