O Scottish race ! God's holy shrines have been defiled by thee,<br />

His sacred temples thou hast burnt, O crying shame to see !<br />

Think not that thou for these misdeeds shalt punishment avoid,<br />

For Hexham's famous sanctuary polluted and destroyed.<br />

The pillaged house of Lanercost lies ruined and defaced ;<br />

The doers of such sacrilege must cruel vengeance taste.<br />

Let irons, fire, and famine now scourge the wicked race,<br />
