Chronicle of Lanercost 1<br />

IN the same year the said Robert de Brus, King of <strong>Scotland</strong>, 2<br />

came with a great army in the month of August to the<br />

monastery of Lanercost, and remained t<strong>here</strong> three days, making<br />

many of the <strong>can</strong>ons prisoners and doing an infinity of injury ;<br />

but at last the <strong>can</strong>ons were set at liberty by himself.<br />

The said Earl [of Lancaster] entered Newcastle with a large<br />

body of men-at-arms in order to seize the said Piers, according<br />

to what had been ordained by the earls and barons;<br />

but it so happened that the king and he had gone to<br />

Tynemouth, which is about six miles from Newcastle, and, hearing<br />

that the earl was after them, they embarked in an open boat and<br />

made for Scarborough, and were then received t<strong>here</strong>. But the<br />

king, having dismissed Piers t<strong>here</strong> and Henry<br />

de Beaumond<br />

(likewise an alien) with some others for the defence of the castle,<br />

left them and went to Knaresborough Castle, and thence forward<br />

to York, thinking t<strong>here</strong>by to cause the siege of Scarborough to<br />

be raised if the castle should be besieged ; but he failed to effect<br />

what he wished. For the Earl of Lancaster, hearing that the<br />

king and Piers had separated, and that Piers was in the castle,<br />

attacked it most vigorously, so that very shortly Piers was<br />

forced to surrender himself. This, however, he did upon terms<br />

which, as I have not heard them, I have not written. Having<br />

surrendered, he was committed to the custody of Sir Aymer de<br />

Valence, Earl of Pembroke, who had ever before been his chief<br />

enemy, and about the feast of the nativity of John the Baptist, 3<br />

in the absence of Aymer de Valence, he was beheaded on the<br />
