Evidence of the unpleasantness caused by Denton's work on<br />

behalf of the Crown may be gat<strong>here</strong>d from a letter of one of his<br />

confederates in 1608 to the Earl of Salisbury. As the communi-<br />

cation throws a much-needed light upon the methods then in<br />

fashion, it would be a pity to abridge it.<br />

slanderous and hard speaches against one Mr. Denton, a justice of peace in<br />

Comberland, and my selfe, onely because we offred by the meanes of the<br />

Bushop of Bristoll, who therwithe acquainted his Majesty to advaunce his<br />

highnes revynews in landes yearly 3OOO H wch is<br />

intayled and belonging to<br />

y e Crowne, deteyned and wrongfullye possessed by y e said Lawson and<br />

soundrye others asshalbe proved by auncyent recordes, intaylesand attaynders.<br />

Now to hinder the Kinges title frome he<br />

tryall, plottes to disgrace us<br />

behind our backes by odyous enformacions to yo lo[rdship] and other<br />

honorable persons w<strong>here</strong>in he <strong>can</strong> reape no credet. Yt is not fit the<br />

Kinges revynews shold be concealed and still wrongfullye possessed upon<br />

his untrue suggestions, who threatnes by impresonment and other unlaw-<br />

full proceadinges to hinder Mr. Denton and me in y sayd service.<br />

lo[rdship] is y 1 his Majesty may have an honor-<br />

able, open and lawfull tryall, w<strong>here</strong> the best in the countrye may be<br />

commissioners and jurors, wherbye yt shall appere y l the Kinges Majesty<br />

seekes nothing but his auncyent Crowne landes, w ch we have ben willed<br />

by comaundm 1 to mayke knowne and prosecute on his Majesty behaulfe.<br />
