The site was sampled for the duration <strong>of</strong> the exposure period for 3 days<br />

over the penod 9-14 May 2000 (Table 5.4). Fluorescence measurements (F, 15<br />

and F,, 15) were first taken approximately 20 min after exposure, approximately<br />

once an hour for the duration <strong>of</strong> the exposure period and immediately prior to<br />

submersion (Table 5.6). The fluorescence measurements were always taken from<br />

exactly the same spot at all times and on all days. To achieve this, a template was<br />

placed in between two canes that were left at the site in between sampling<br />

periods (Figure 5.3 B). The measurements were taken approximately 10 cm apart<br />

and the area sampled was 0.18 m. Each spot was dark-adapted using an opaque<br />

lid and the fluorescence measurements were taken at the same time as lid<br />

removal.<br />

Sediment temperature was logged every 10 min using a Grant probe and<br />

data logger. PPFD was recorded at least once an hour using a LICOR LI-189<br />

light meter.<br />
