while "the Proctors were elegantly entertained at the Queen's Arms<br />

tavern in St. Paul's Churchyard" [Lloyd's Evening Post, II (1758), p.<br />

Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, more commonly the<br />

S.P.C.K., was founded in 1698 not only to forward the building <strong>of</strong><br />

charity schools, but also to disseminate, at home and abroad, religious<br />

tracts and Bibles. <strong>The</strong> society was the first organized and systematic<br />

attempt to provide educational and missionary work overseas.<br />

a large 4° Parochial Book, written in Seeker's own hand, is usually<br />

referred to as the Speculum (L.P.L. VG 2/5).
