Bp <strong>of</strong> Durham: Richard Trevor (1707-1771), who was the court<br />

candidate, even though <strong>of</strong> a Tory background.<br />

Dr Dickens: Samuel Dickens (1719?-1791), who had matriculated at<br />

Christ Church, Oxford, in 1736, receiving his B.D. in 1752 and D.D. in<br />

1753. He held the regius chair <strong>of</strong> Greek from 1751 to 1763, and was<br />

appointed prebendary <strong>of</strong> Durham 1757 and archdeacon <strong>of</strong> Durham to<br />

which was annexed the rectory <strong>of</strong> Easington 1761 until his death (Foster,<br />

Alumni Oxon.).<br />

Ld Westmorland was chosen: the chancellor's election <strong>of</strong> 1759 was the<br />

first contested one within memory, and hard fought between three<br />

contenders: Bishop Trevor, Westmorland and Lord Lichfield<br />

(1718-1772) who had the support <strong>of</strong> the "Old Interest." Although<br />

Trevor was at first in the lead, Lichfield withdrew, throwing his interest<br />

to Westmorland who won handily 321 votes to 200 [Oxford Univ.<br />

Archives WP y 3 (3), case submitted to Charles Yorke by the vicechancellor<br />

and answer, 2 January, 1759; Ward, Georgian Oxford, pp.<br />

207-09].<br />

Dr Ducarel: Adrian Colte Ducarel (1713-1785), who was keeper <strong>of</strong> the<br />

library at Lambeth 1757-85. Born in Normandy, he was naturalized by<br />

12 George II private act 34. He was trained in canon law at Oxford and<br />

was admitted advocate at Doctors' Commons in 1743. As librarian he<br />

greatly improved the catalogues <strong>of</strong> the printed books and manuscripts at<br />

Lambeth, and completed a digest <strong>of</strong> all the registers and records for the<br />

province <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>. According to John Nichols who wrote a<br />

memoir, Ducarel was "disappointed in his wishes <strong>of</strong> entering into holy<br />

orders" (Literary Anecdotes, VI, p. 380).<br />

FOLIO 54 (1759-65)<br />

Printing his Endowmt: Dr Ducarel's Repertory <strong>of</strong> the Endowments <strong>of</strong><br />

Vicarages in the Diocese <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> was published in London in 1763.<br />

John Benson (b. 1724), son <strong>of</strong> John Benson, citizen and girdler <strong>of</strong><br />

London, was also the nephew <strong>of</strong> Seeker's wife. He matriculated at<br />

Christ Church, Oxford, in 1743, and married Susannah, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

William Oliver <strong>of</strong> Bath (Burke, Landed Gentry).<br />

Mr Marsh: William Marsh, B.A. (1718?-1802), who held this parish<br />

with Bicknor to which he was appointed in 1743. Hasted described St.<br />

Mary's as "an entire flat <strong>of</strong> marshgrounds, without a hedge or tree<br />

among them" (History and Topographical Survey <strong>of</strong>. . . Kent, III, p. 501).
