<strong>The</strong> Autobiography <strong>of</strong> <strong>Archbishop</strong> Thomas Seeker<br />
gave also Horton R. to Mr Fausset, bee. the Income was sunk so, that<br />
no body cared to take it; & he being a man <strong>of</strong> Substance, was most likely<br />
to raise it. Also Newchurch R & V {to} 120 u , to Mr Robt Tournay,<br />
recommended by the D. <strong>of</strong> Newcastle. Dr Fowell marrying & leaving me<br />
this Year, I took Mr, now Dr, Stinton <strong>of</strong> Exeter Coll. for my Chaplain &<br />
gave him Wittrisham R. 220 11 in August. I gave Mr Gurney Whitstable<br />
C abt 40^. In the End <strong>of</strong> this Year & beginning <strong>of</strong> 1766 I had a long Fit<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Gout, like that <strong>of</strong> the preceding Year. I engaged Mr Ridley to<br />
write his Review <strong>of</strong> Phillips's Life <strong>of</strong> Card. Pole, & assisted him greatly<br />
in it, revising the whole in MS. And I gave him my Option-Prebend <strong>of</strong><br />
Sarum, worth communibus annis near 200^. I knew not beforehand <strong>of</strong><br />
Dr Neves Design to write on the same Subject. I also encouraged Mr<br />
Bell, whom I had before recommended to Princess Amelia for her<br />
Chaplain, to write a Defence <strong>of</strong> Revelation, agst the pretended Rational<br />
Christian. After he had written it once over, I induced him to throw it<br />
into a new Form, suggested to him innumerable Corrections, Additions,<br />
& Improvements, & wrote the last Chapter almost intirely.<br />
<strong>The</strong> King having expressed to me his Desire in 1765 that I would<br />
publish a volume <strong>of</strong> Sermons, I did so in the Beginning <strong>of</strong> 1766. I paid<br />
Mr Rivington for some Copies <strong>of</strong> the former volume, which I gave away,<br />
besides those which he allowed me: but not now: How many I had each<br />
time, I do not remember.]<br />
In the beginning <strong>of</strong> 1766 I gave to Dr Uri a Hungarian, now at<br />
Oxford, 10 Guineas, wch I must continue yearly.<br />
I gave also towards the Repair <strong>of</strong> Sittingbourn Church, 50 1 *. And I<br />
had written before & printed & sent about at my own Expence, a Letter,<br />
recommending the Brief for it, throughout my own Dioceses: which<br />
greatly increased the Collection. It amounted to 600 11 or more.<br />
I gave also to the Fire at Montreal in Canada, 30 1 *.<br />
And to Mrs Thornhill, formerly Reyner, a relation <strong>of</strong> Mr Hollister, I<br />
gave this year 20 1 *. I had given her 70 11 before. I have also given to Mrs<br />
Judith Boddington, a neighbour & Friend <strong>of</strong> his, at different times, 80^.<br />
I joined with Ld Radnor in paying the Expences <strong>of</strong> a Bill for securing<br />
the Church & Harbour <strong>of</strong> Folkestone. Each half was 84 11 . On this<br />
Occasion I was not well used by Ld Radnor. See the Letters relative to<br />
it.<br />
FOLIO 65 I gave Mr Ray cr<strong>of</strong>t, Son in Law to Dr Stonehewer my<br />
1766 Fellow-Chaplain, the Livings <strong>of</strong> Patching & Terring, worth<br />
each abt 80 11 a Year. And the Houses being in bad<br />
Condition, I gave him 100 11 towards Building & Repairs.<br />
This Year I have paid the last <strong>of</strong> Burkitts Expences for keeping<br />
Terms & taking his Batchelors Degree at Oxford; which have been<br />
above 125 11 , & 3* 1 since & above 6 11 more.
