Fragments of inlay<br />

21a. Fragment of inlay from central panel (Figures V.76,<br />

V.77)<br />

l. 3¼ in. (8 cm), W. 1 3⁄8 in. (3.6 cm), thickness at ancient<br />

edge .23 cm<br />

Description. This is a thin strip that is slightly convex along<br />

its length. The preserved edges form a right angle, are cut<br />

obliquely, and have crisscross incisions running over the<br />

surface of the cut. an indentation the size of a fingertip is<br />

visible near the longest preserved edge, about 1¼ in. (3 cm)<br />

from the corner.<br />

Con<strong>di</strong>tion. an edge 3¼ in. (8 cm) long and forming a right<br />

angle with the first, another edge, 1⁄8 in. (.3 cm) long, have<br />

been preserved. The outer surface is well preserved, whereas<br />

the inner one is eroded.<br />

Technical observations. a comparison with the fragments<br />

described below in<strong>di</strong>cates that crisscross incisions resembling<br />

those running along the edge were almost certainly<br />

present over the entire inner surface. They served in the attachment<br />

of the strip with an adhesive, increasing the bon<strong>di</strong>ng<br />

surface.<br />

l. 2¾ in. (7 cm), W. ¾ in. (2 cm), thickness at ancient<br />

edge .23 cm<br />

Description. This thin strip resembles the previous one and<br />

preserves the same type of ancient edge for a length of<br />

2 5⁄8 in. (6.6 cm). Crisscross incisions occur on the underside<br />

and also along the obliquely cut edge, near which the same<br />

indentation appears as on the previous fragment.<br />

Con<strong>di</strong>tion. The fragment has been recomposed from two<br />

pieces.<br />
