Family i. Pinace^e.— Old name Coniferae. The pine family.<br />

(Cone-bearing family.) Trees or shrubs, with resinous juice, mostly<br />

awl-shaped or needle-shaped leaves, and monoecious or rarely dioecious<br />

flowers in catkins, destitute of calyx or carolla. Three sub-families,<br />

Abietineas, or proper pine family; Cupressineae, or cypress family; and<br />

Taxinese, or yew family. All are evergreen excepting the Larches.<br />
