The problem with fighting against the Lord
Longfords of this world was that no one would
offer their support. No one in Parliament, for
instance, stood up and argued for more
freedom for erotica once Lord Longford had
addressed the House of Lords and attacked it.
Their lordships were frightened of being
labelled for any support they might show for
the so-called sex industry.
I wonder how many of their lordships
purchased what Lord Longford deemed
pornography?
I was brought before the courts a number of
times, but to succeed in business you have to
have courage as well as luck, determination,
perseverance and of course opportunity.
When people ask, what are the elements for
success, one of the qualities I believe you most
need is courage. Some laws are absurd and as
a young man I couldn’t understand why I
wasn’t allowed to trade at night or on
Sunday. Who was I hurting? These ridiculous
laws were trying to stop me making a living.
Why should anyone tell me I couldn’t work
after six p.m. if I chose to?
I have every respect for the law, but
throughout my entire life I can demonstrate
occasions when the law has been an ass.
Thankfully, times have changed and people no
longer stand for ridiculous rules.
Eventually I only traded on Sundays during the
tourist season. I even became an employer
when I brought in an assistant. He was a
