Dead Jews laid out at Auschwitz
I have subsequently seen the same footage
again on the History Channel on television and
the scenes I saw as a child were repeated and
equally terrifying as I took in the horrors of
Belsen, Auschwitz and the other concentration
camps. It was when the Allied forces were
going through Germany and Poland and the
pictures were coming back for the first time.
Although we know now that there were many
other nationalities involved, it seemed as
though it was Jews, Jews and more Jews
who were being liberated. But thousands lay
dead or dying. The pictures were harrowing.
After seeing the footage in the cinema for the
first time I went to my grandmother, Miriam,
afterwards and asked, ‘Why are people killing
the Jews? Are we so bad?’
I had been told at school we were responsible
for killing Jesus. Now Jews were being killed,
