In the early hours of the morning, while still on
the surface, Thrasher altered course across the
swell and began to roll heavily. Clanging noises
were heard from above, almost as though
some heavy object was loose and rolling about.
To everyone’s horror it was discovered that
there was a bomb, probably weighing about
100lb, lying on the submarine’s outer casing in
front of the four-inch gun mounting. Lieutenant
Peter Roberts and Petty Officer Thomas Gould
volunteered to go on deck and remove the
bomb.
