CHAPTER THIRTEEN<br />

C13. FRENCH KISS<br />

Some time after the trauma of seeing my best<br />

friend John and my wife Beryl having sex in my<br />

swimming pool I met Ann-Marie, a petite<br />

Jewish French girl who was working as a<br />

representative for a magazine company.<br />

She visited our warehouse in Dock Street near<br />

Tower Bridge once a month to deliver<br />

magazines, pick up her cheque and take an<br />

order for the next issues. After concluding our<br />

business we would go across the road for a<br />

glass of wine and a sandwich, and this went on<br />

for a few months.<br />

We chatted about business and other things we<br />

had in common and I found her attractive and<br />

interesting. One thing we had in common was<br />

a passion for Jewish food, so I invited her to<br />

dinner at the famous Bloom’s restaurant; the<br />

very same place on Whitechapel High Street<br />

where Godfrey was due to meet George Cornell<br />

all those years ago.<br />

We had a wonderful evening, laughing, joking<br />

and flirting. After dinner I walked her to her<br />

car, kissed her, and said we must do this<br />

again. Driving home that evening, I couldn’t<br />

get her out of my mind.<br />

Two or three days later my private phone rang<br />

and to my surprise it was Ann-Marie. When she<br />

said, ‘I just need to confirm the orders,’ I<br />

immediately knew this wasn’t the reason for<br />
