I was in the cells for two hours awaiting that
verdict. I was convinced of my innocence and
in the victory of my QC. In footballing terms
we beat the prosecution 10–0 because they
didn’t have an argument, a victim or any
evidence, whilst we showed that our
magazines were harmless adult entertainment
and subject to huge demand. My counsel
proved that erotica was used in psychiatric
institutions where the inmates had no other
form of sexual release. Then there was the
armed forces. Would you deny these men
erotic magazines when they are away from
their wives and their girlfriends serving their
country?
We were only talking about erotica or soft
porn, not the hardcore porn which can involve
child sex or bestiality and is repugnant to me
and every other decent human being.
The simple fact is that many of us will have
enjoyed harmless erotica at some time or
other in our lives.
Victory was certainly sweet, even at such great
personal and financial cost, but while there was
no doubt in my mind about my innocence, I
always hoped the judge might call a halt to the
trial when he realised the prosecution was
losing. However had I been found guilty, he
would have sent me to prison.
