famous people.<br />

A perfect example is Michael Winner; whose<br />

name came up during conversation over dinner<br />

one evening with Lesley, Delia Smith and her<br />

husband Mike, and two of their American<br />

friends, Pamela and Colt, at the River Café in<br />

London. It was a reunion of sorts, as Lesley<br />

and I had met Pamela while holidaying in an<br />

exclusive game park in South Africa, and<br />

remarkably, we discovered we were both<br />

friends of Delia and Mike.<br />

After pre-dinner drinks we were escorted to the<br />

best table in the restaurant where we ordered<br />

dinner. Then, who should arrive but Michael<br />

Winner, looking full of himself, accompanied by<br />

two attractive ladies.<br />

‘It’s Michael Winner,’ I groaned. Surprisingly<br />

there were groans from all my dining<br />

companions. Amazingly we’d all come across<br />

the food critic in the pass and none of us had<br />

found him very palatable.<br />

Three years earlier, Lesley and I were planning<br />

a holiday in Morocco when Lesley told me she<br />

had read an article by Michael Winner highly<br />

praising a Moroccan restaurant called Le Tobsil<br />

in Marrakesh. On arriving at our hotel, La<br />

Mamounia, I immediately booked the<br />

restaurant for 8.30 p.m. and arranged for a car<br />

to take us there. That evening, walking<br />

through reception, I was struck by how lovely<br />

Lesley looked; absolutely stunning in a<br />

beautiful evening dress, and wearing her new<br />
