famous people.
A perfect example is Michael Winner; whose
name came up during conversation over dinner
one evening with Lesley, Delia Smith and her
husband Mike, and two of their American
friends, Pamela and Colt, at the River Café in
London. It was a reunion of sorts, as Lesley
and I had met Pamela while holidaying in an
exclusive game park in South Africa, and
remarkably, we discovered we were both
friends of Delia and Mike.
After pre-dinner drinks we were escorted to the
best table in the restaurant where we ordered
dinner. Then, who should arrive but Michael
Winner, looking full of himself, accompanied by
two attractive ladies.
‘It’s Michael Winner,’ I groaned. Surprisingly
there were groans from all my dining
companions. Amazingly we’d all come across
the food critic in the pass and none of us had
found him very palatable.
Three years earlier, Lesley and I were planning
a holiday in Morocco when Lesley told me she
had read an article by Michael Winner highly
praising a Moroccan restaurant called Le Tobsil
in Marrakesh. On arriving at our hotel, La
Mamounia, I immediately booked the
restaurant for 8.30 p.m. and arranged for a car
to take us there. That evening, walking
through reception, I was struck by how lovely
Lesley looked; absolutely stunning in a
beautiful evening dress, and wearing her new
