Autobiography

The conditions on board were almost
indescribable; the prisoners were overcrowded
and undernourished, many had contracted
diphtheria, dysentery and other diseases, and
they had no medical attention and no
sanitation. No attempt had been made to
remove the bodies of prisoners who had died.
Lisbon Maru
The drawing shows the sinking of the unmarked
Prisoner Of War hellship Lisbon Maru in the China
Sea, on the 2 nd October 1942 as a result of torpedo
attack by an Allied submarine. The picture was
drawn by Lt. W.C. Johnson, US Navy for the Official
Records.
A United Nations submarine torpedoed the
vessel, which was not displaying a Red Cross
flag. The Japanese officers, soldiers and crew
left the prisoners under the hatchways and
