The conditions on board were almost<br />

indescribable; the prisoners were overcrowded<br />

and undernourished, many had contracted<br />

diphtheria, dysentery and other diseases, and<br />

they had no medical attention and no<br />

sanitation. No attempt had been made to<br />

remove the bodies of prisoners who had died.<br />

Lisbon Maru<br />

The drawing shows the sinking of the unmarked<br />

Prisoner Of War hellship Lisbon Maru in the China<br />

Sea, on the 2 nd October 1942 as a result of torpedo<br />

attack by an Allied submarine. The picture was<br />

drawn by Lt. W.C. Johnson, US Navy for the Official<br />

Records.<br />

A United Nations submarine torpedoed the<br />

vessel, which was not displaying a Red Cross<br />

flag. The Japanese officers, soldiers and crew<br />

left the prisoners under the hatchways and<br />
