Autobiography

For her 88 th birthday she went to a dance
weekend for elderly people but decided
afterwards that she wouldn’t go again because
the other participants were too old. If there
was one person there older than her it would
have been a major surprise. They were
probably only older than her in their attitude to
life. At one stage, when she was in her early
eighties, she was very friendly with a man
named Charlie. When I discovered she wasn’t
seeing him anymore, I asked her what had
happened, and she told me he wasn’t sexy
enough!
She was so active there just wasn’t a minute
spare in her life. I have no doubt at all that
she was making up for the lost years, and she
treasured every second, saying, ‘Why should I
take it easy? I’ll have plenty of time for that
when I’m dead!’
It’s hard to argue with her philosophy.
She was a truly amazing woman and I think of
her every day.
Mum was the first inspirational women in my
life. Now there’s Lesley. And along the way my
two girls Vanessa and Jacqueline have been a
great source of pride and strength. As any
football manager will tell you a strong back
four is essential. I couldn’t have asked for four
stronger, braver women to be by my side over
the years. Now there is my lovely
granddaughter Scarlett Rose, what part will
she play in my life? Only time will tell.
