5. Destroy unity based on <strong>sen</strong>timent—<strong>sen</strong>timental unity is petty bourgeois unity<br />

—we build our unity on Party <strong>in</strong>terests.<br />

8. We must employ <strong>in</strong> our work for <strong>the</strong> Party <strong>the</strong> same k<strong>in</strong>d of <strong>in</strong>terest we have<br />

<strong>in</strong> love <strong>and</strong> literature—love <strong>and</strong> literature are <strong>the</strong> foundation of romanticism.*<br />

11. We must studiously avoid academic-type study—academic-type study denies<br />

that <strong>the</strong>ory is born of practice.<br />

13. We must pay attention to <strong>the</strong> Russian language aside from our studies—we<br />

absolutely must not ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> erroneous idea that we should first study<br />

Russian before we study ideology.<br />

16. We must strive to elim<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> [bad habits of <strong>the</strong>] <strong>in</strong>telligentsia—<strong>the</strong> bad<br />

habits of university students <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire petty bourgeoisie.. ..<br />

17. We must at all times <strong>and</strong> everywhere mutually correct each o<strong>the</strong>r's errors of<br />

thought <strong>and</strong> action.<br />

18. When we have op<strong>in</strong>ions, we must express <strong>the</strong>m—if we hide our op<strong>in</strong>ions <strong>and</strong><br />

do not express <strong>the</strong>m, we would be st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g outside <strong>the</strong> organization <strong>and</strong> encourag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

counterrevolutionary [tendencies].<br />

22. Every comrade must develop close relations with at least two o<strong>the</strong>r comrades<br />

(exclusive of comrades belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> same small unit) <strong>in</strong> order to achieve<br />

solidarity among our comrades.<br />

23. The organization's <strong>in</strong>terest is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual's <strong>in</strong>terest. We must not obstruct<br />

<strong>the</strong> organization's advance because of <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>terest.. ..<br />

24. ... We must have <strong>the</strong> psychology of thoroughly trust<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> organization—it<br />

is counterrevolutionary conduct not to trust <strong>the</strong> organization.<br />

25. Our lives <strong>and</strong> our will must not be based on <strong>in</strong>dividual beliefs or <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

will. . . . There is absolutely no such th<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>in</strong>dividual life or <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

free will.<br />

26. We must strictly criticize our comrades' errors <strong>and</strong> humbly accept our comrades'<br />

criticism .... Wherever he may be, every Communist must at all times<br />

criticize <strong>and</strong> supervise his comrades <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> relations of mutual<br />

supervision (<strong>the</strong> mutual relations of Communists mean mutual supervision).<br />

Articles four <strong>and</strong> five required that members of <strong>the</strong> CCP disown<br />

<strong>and</strong> denounce <strong>the</strong>ir parents, friends, <strong>and</strong> relatives, much as was <strong>the</strong> case<br />

<strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a after <strong>the</strong> Communists came to power <strong>in</strong> 1949. The<br />

leaders of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Moscow</strong> branch stirred up a relentless struggle aga<strong>in</strong>st all<br />

k<strong>in</strong>ds of <strong>sen</strong>timentalism.<br />

Article eight denied <strong>the</strong> Party members love <strong>and</strong> literature, because<br />
