nights on <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>. We f<strong>in</strong>ally arrived <strong>in</strong> <strong>Moscow</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of<br />
December, 1926.<br />
This was my first long trip to a foreign l<strong>and</strong> where, while <strong>the</strong> old<br />
regime had been overthrown by revolution, <strong>the</strong> new order did not<br />
always work without difficulties. Its imperfections were to catch one's<br />
eye everywhere, as we witnessed on <strong>the</strong> way to <strong>Moscow</strong>. We had<br />
bitter experiences <strong>and</strong> suffered on this trip. Never<strong>the</strong>less, our revolutionary<br />
spirits did not sag an <strong>in</strong>ch, <strong>and</strong> we still envisioned a glorious<br />
future for Soviet Russia, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> only ally of our country <strong>in</strong> its fight<br />
for <strong>in</strong>dependence <strong>and</strong> freedom.<br />

4. A book privately published <strong>and</strong> distributed by Chiang Ch<strong>in</strong>g-kuo, <strong>the</strong> elder son of<br />
Chiang Kai-shek. The book was written when he served as <strong>the</strong> Foreign M<strong>in</strong>istry's special<br />
envoy <strong>in</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>ast Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> 1945. Unfortunately I have not been able to exam<strong>in</strong>e a copy<br />
of <strong>the</strong> book, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> quotation given was copied by a friend <strong>in</strong> Taipei <strong>and</strong> communicated<br />
to me <strong>in</strong> a letter. My friend, however, failed to supply <strong>the</strong> page on which <strong>the</strong> quotation<br />
appears.<br />
5. In Chiang Kai-shek's A Fortnight <strong>in</strong> Sian: Extracts from a Diary (Shanghai: Walsh<br />
Ltd., 1937, p. 57) Li T'ien-ts'ai is identified at <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> Sian Incident as "head of <strong>in</strong>telligence<br />
work under Chang Hsueh-liang." His formal title is listed (p. 118) as Assistant<br />
Director of <strong>the</strong> Northwestern Political Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Department of <strong>the</strong> Military Affairs Commission,<br />
under Chang Hsueh-liang.<br />
6. Feng Yu-hsiang had recently returned to Ch<strong>in</strong>a from <strong>the</strong> trip he had made to Russia<br />
<strong>in</strong> May, 1926. Feng had asked <strong>the</strong> CCP to supply him with one hundred political workers<br />
for his army, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> CC of <strong>the</strong> CCP had given <strong>the</strong> Party committee for Pek<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />
areas <strong>the</strong> task of recommend<strong>in</strong>g cadres to fill <strong>the</strong>se posts. I already had made<br />
some recommendations of my own, <strong>and</strong> at this po<strong>in</strong>t I was merely recommend<strong>in</strong>g myself<br />
for one of <strong>the</strong> posts <strong>in</strong> Feng Yu-hsiang's army.<br />
