kan-shih hui). # The General Committee was made up wholly of<br />
people who had attended <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Surely Stal<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> his<br />
wildest dreams could not have imag<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />
which he helped to establish, would generate so many disciples of his<br />
deadliest enemy—Trotsky. Yet <strong>the</strong>se disciples of Trotsky were emperors<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own households only; <strong>the</strong>y had no substantial popular follow<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The official title of <strong>the</strong> organization formed at <strong>the</strong> January, 1930,<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g was Chung-\uo Kung-ch'an-tang tso-p'ai huan-tuei-p'at (Left<br />
opposition of <strong>the</strong> CCP). A participant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trotskyite events of<br />
<strong>the</strong> time told me many years later that <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Left opposition<br />
responded to <strong>in</strong>structions from Trotsky <strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up this organization.<br />
Trotsky's <strong>in</strong>structions were to rema<strong>in</strong> with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> organizational framework<br />
of <strong>the</strong> established CCP, ra<strong>the</strong>r than to form a rival organization<br />
which would be isolated from <strong>the</strong> members of that Party. The Left<br />
opposition could, Trotsky reportedly said, operate more expeditiously<br />
with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> established Party than from outside. This tactic failed,<br />
however, for <strong>the</strong> Trotskyites soon were expelled from <strong>the</strong> established<br />
Party.<br />
Among <strong>the</strong> slogans that <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Left opposition that was<br />
probably formed <strong>in</strong> January, 1930, used were <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
1. To dem<strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> CC [of <strong>the</strong> established CCP] publicly discuss<br />
<strong>the</strong> issues raised by <strong>the</strong> Left opposition.<br />
2. To dem<strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> CC convene a National Party Congress to<br />
elect a new CC.<br />
3. To dem<strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> CC appeal to <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern to publicly<br />
discuss <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a problem.<br />
4. To dem<strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> CPSU restore Trotsky to his former position<br />
<strong>in</strong> that Party.<br />
# The General Committee apparently <strong>in</strong>cluded Liang Kan-ch'ao, Shih Shou-yun, Ch'en<br />
I-mou, Li Mei-wu, <strong>Sun</strong>g Feng-ch'un, Chang T'e, <strong>and</strong> Lu Yen, who started us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> name<br />
Lu I-yuan when he returned to Ch<strong>in</strong>a. The follow<strong>in</strong>g people seem to have been elected alternate<br />
members of <strong>the</strong> General Committee: Hsiao P<strong>in</strong>-yang, Ou Fang, T'ang Yueh-po <strong>and</strong> Hsu<br />
Chen-an. Shih Shou-yun was secretary general of <strong>the</strong> General Committee; Lu Yen was<br />
director of propag<strong>and</strong>a; Chang T'e was director of organizational affairs; Hsu Chen-an<br />
was <strong>in</strong> charge of activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kiangsu-Chekiang area; Liang Kan-ch'ao was <strong>in</strong> charge of<br />
activities <strong>in</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ch<strong>in</strong>a; Ou Fang was <strong>in</strong> charge of propag<strong>and</strong>a <strong>in</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ch<strong>in</strong>a; Ch'en<br />

of activities <strong>in</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn Ch<strong>in</strong>a; Hsiao P<strong>in</strong>-yang was <strong>in</strong> charge of propag<strong>and</strong>a <strong>in</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
