<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce, Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Communists quickly came to occupy significant<br />

posts—<strong>in</strong> government, <strong>the</strong> educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions, <strong>the</strong> mass<br />

organizations, <strong>and</strong> so forth. Interest<strong>in</strong>gly, <strong>in</strong> Sian, doubtless with Feng<br />

Yu-hsiang's con<strong>sen</strong>t, an organization comparable to <strong>the</strong> Russian GPU<br />

was created. It was called <strong>the</strong> Department of Political Defense (chengchih<br />

pao wei pu). Meanwhile, at Sian <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> Military<br />

Academy was established. Both <strong>the</strong> Department of Political Defense<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> Military Academy were headed by a Communist<br />

named Shih K'o-hsuan. Liu Po-chien, a Communist, was made head<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Political Department of <strong>the</strong> united Kuom<strong>in</strong>chun, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> CCP<br />

rapidly exp<strong>and</strong>ed its political work with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kuom<strong>in</strong>chun. In addition<br />

to Liu Po-chien, such Communists as Liu Chih-tan <strong>and</strong> Li L<strong>in</strong><br />

were active <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kuom<strong>in</strong>chun. Liu Chih-tan was subsequently to become<br />

a founder of <strong>the</strong> Shensi-Kansu Soviet area. 13<br />

The young Party activists recruited by <strong>the</strong> Pek<strong>in</strong>g Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Communist<br />

organization specifically for work <strong>in</strong> Feng Yu-hsiang's army, about<br />

one hundred of <strong>the</strong>m, were also by this time work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kuom<strong>in</strong>chun.<br />

I might digress a bit to rem<strong>in</strong>isce about one of <strong>the</strong>m, a close,<br />

lifelong friend of m<strong>in</strong>e named Wu Chung-Ian. We came from <strong>the</strong><br />

same village <strong>in</strong> Hunan, <strong>and</strong> we studied at <strong>the</strong> same university <strong>in</strong> Pek<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

It was I who conv<strong>in</strong>ced him that he should jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> CCP <strong>and</strong> who<br />

sponsored his membership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Party. It was I, too, who recommended<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Pek<strong>in</strong>g Communist organization that he be assigned<br />

to work <strong>in</strong> Feng Yu-hsiang's army, <strong>and</strong> he left to undertake this work<br />

before I left Pek<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>Moscow</strong>. In 1927, when Feng Yu-hsiang turned<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Communists, most Communists work<strong>in</strong>g under<br />

him were dismissed, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs executed. Wu Chung-Ian was executed.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> rapid success of <strong>the</strong> Northward Expedition of <strong>the</strong> National<br />

<strong>Revolution</strong>ary Army, <strong>the</strong>re was a swift growth of dis<strong>sen</strong>sion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

revolutionary ranks. Start<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> anti-Communist coup <strong>in</strong> Shanghai,<br />

<strong>the</strong> conflict between <strong>the</strong> revolutionary <strong>and</strong> counterrevolutionary<br />

elements <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wuhan government area was <strong>in</strong>tensified. Even <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

upper echelons of <strong>the</strong> Wuhan government <strong>the</strong>re were signs of discord.<br />

Sens<strong>in</strong>g danger for <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese revolution, <strong>the</strong> students of <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong><strong>sen</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> passed a resolution on June 9, 1927, urg<strong>in</strong>g Feng Yuhsiang<br />

<strong>and</strong> T'ang Sheng-chih to hold <strong>the</strong> revolutionary l<strong>in</strong>e. The<br />

complete text of <strong>the</strong> resolution follows:<br />
