forty years of revolutionary struggle <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> frequent violation of discipl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
on <strong>the</strong> part of those who betrayed him while pretend<strong>in</strong>g to speak <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of<br />
Dr. <strong>Sun</strong>'s pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. Before his death Dr. <strong>Sun</strong> asked me to visit <strong>Moscow</strong> on his<br />
behalf. Therefore, I have come here to fulfill his wish. In <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> revolutionary<br />
masses of Ch<strong>in</strong>a, I assure <strong>the</strong> people of Soviet Russia that we have<br />
appreciated <strong>the</strong>ir cooperation with us <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past, <strong>and</strong> we are confident that this<br />
cooperation will be cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> years of struggle to come. 8<br />
Stal<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Soviet leaders warmly received Soong Ch'<strong>in</strong>g-l<strong>in</strong>g<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g her stay <strong>in</strong> <strong>Moscow</strong>, <strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong>m all she asked that Russia cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
to support <strong>the</strong> revolution <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />
The students at <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>University</strong>, especially <strong>the</strong> women students,<br />
brimmed with pride at her outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g performance. At a<br />
welcom<strong>in</strong>g reception held for Soong Ch'<strong>in</strong>g-l<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Eugene Ch'en<br />
at <strong>the</strong> university, her poise, beauty, <strong>and</strong> charm evoked waves of love<br />
<strong>and</strong> respect from all of us. A native of Kwangtung, Madame <strong>Sun</strong>'s<br />
Shanghai dialect was impeccable, <strong>and</strong> she spoke to us that day <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Shanghai dialect. She expressed deep gratification, as I recall it, at<br />
visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first Ch<strong>in</strong>ese university named after her late husb<strong>and</strong> to<br />
be established abroad. She told us <strong>the</strong> thrill she experienced at see<strong>in</strong>g<br />
so many fervent young people who were devot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir energies to <strong>the</strong><br />
realization of <strong>the</strong> Three Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of <strong>the</strong> People. Never forget, she<br />
admonished us, that we were disciples of <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>and</strong> that we had<br />
been tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> a university that bore his name. She urged us never<br />
to forget that <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong>'s most precious behests were <strong>the</strong> Three<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of <strong>the</strong> People <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> three policies: unite with Soviet<br />
Russia, cooperate with <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Communists, <strong>and</strong> work for <strong>the</strong><br />
workers <strong>and</strong> peasants. It was only after Dr. <strong>Sun</strong> adopted his "three<br />
policies," she said, that momentum towards <strong>the</strong> realization of <strong>the</strong><br />
Three Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of <strong>the</strong> People <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> KMT ga<strong>in</strong>ed new<br />
strength. She stressed, however, as she had done <strong>in</strong> her TASS statement,<br />
that people who had betrayed <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> were pretend<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
speak <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of his pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. She mentioned no names <strong>in</strong> this<br />
connection. In any event, she was an effective orator. Her crisp, clear<br />
voice was periodically drowned out by our applause. She made an<br />
<strong>in</strong>delibly warm impression upon her audience.<br />
Immediately follow<strong>in</strong>g Soong Ch'<strong>in</strong>g-l<strong>in</strong>g that day at <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>, Eugene Ch'en spoke to us. He enjoyed great popularity <strong>in</strong><br />
