worried <strong>the</strong> 28 Bolsheviks. For she was friendly with Chou Ta-m<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Tung Yi-hsiang, <strong>and</strong> Yu Hsiu-sung, <strong>the</strong> leaders of <strong>the</strong> former Academic<br />

Affairs faction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> university who were supporters of <strong>the</strong> Second<br />

L<strong>in</strong>e. She had made it abundantly clear on numerous occasions that<br />

she regarded Chou Ta-m<strong>in</strong>g as a "Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Len<strong>in</strong>." It seemed a strong<br />

possibility that Chou Ta-m<strong>in</strong>g would be able to <strong>in</strong>fluence her views on<br />

<strong>the</strong> matter. Moreover, when she launched her <strong>in</strong>vestigation, it did<br />

<strong>in</strong>deed seem as though she was not ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> data that she<br />

needed to prepare an impartial report. She did not, so far as I remember,<br />

for example, consult any of <strong>the</strong> 28 Bolsheviks, although she did<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> views of some members of <strong>the</strong> Second L<strong>in</strong>e coalition. We<br />

acqua<strong>in</strong>ted Mif with <strong>the</strong> special relationship between her <strong>and</strong> Chou<br />

Ta-m<strong>in</strong>g. He used his <strong>in</strong>fluence with Stal<strong>in</strong> to <strong>in</strong>duce Stal<strong>in</strong> to ask<br />

Mrs. Yaroslavsky not to submit a biased report. Because of Stal<strong>in</strong>'s <strong>in</strong>tervention,<br />

no doubt, Mrs. Yaroslavsky <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> end submitted a report<br />

which temporized a good deal. She recommended that <strong>the</strong> CC of <strong>the</strong><br />

CPSU endorse <strong>the</strong> general political l<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> bureau of <strong>the</strong> Party<br />

branch at <strong>the</strong> university. At <strong>the</strong> same time, though, she criticized <strong>the</strong><br />

bureau for numerous shortcom<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> its day-to-day Party work. The<br />

CC of <strong>the</strong> CPSU accepted her recommendation <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>structed her to<br />

pre<strong>sen</strong>t her f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs at a general Party meet<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> university, which<br />

was held sometime early <strong>in</strong> 1930. I remember that when she reached<br />

<strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> her report at which she recommended support for <strong>the</strong><br />

general political l<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> Party bureau, <strong>the</strong> 28 Bolsheviks <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

supporters greeted her words with enthusiastic applause, while <strong>the</strong><br />

members of <strong>the</strong> Second L<strong>in</strong>e coalition listened with bowed heads.<br />

Her statements repre<strong>sen</strong>ted noth<strong>in</strong>g less than a recognition that <strong>the</strong><br />

Party bureau <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> 28 Bolsheviks were basically correct <strong>and</strong> a condemnation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Second L<strong>in</strong>e coalition as be<strong>in</strong>g basically anti-Party.<br />

The Second L<strong>in</strong>e coalition <strong>and</strong> its backers, Ch'u Ch'iu-pai <strong>and</strong><br />

Chang Kuo-t'ao, suffered complete defeat. For shortly after <strong>the</strong> CPSU<br />

adopted its resolution endors<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> political l<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> Party bureau<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> university, Russian delegates to <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern <strong>in</strong>troduced a<br />

similar resolution <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern, which criticized <strong>the</strong> attitude of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Communist Com<strong>in</strong>tern delegates <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir struggle. 7 This<br />

gave Mif <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> 28 Bolsheviks an additional victory, while Ch'u<br />

Ch'iu-pai <strong>and</strong> Chang Kuo-t'ao were completely routed. Although Mif<br />
