students to edit <strong>and</strong> translate it <strong>in</strong>to Ch<strong>in</strong>ese. It was issued as a<br />

pamphlet <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese only two days after Stal<strong>in</strong>'s appearance. Copies<br />

of <strong>the</strong> pamphlet were made available to all students <strong>and</strong> faculty members<br />

of <strong>the</strong> university. Meanwhile, <strong>the</strong> Party bureau called a meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of all <strong>the</strong> directors of Communist Party cells <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> university—all of<br />

whom were Russians—<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>structed <strong>the</strong>m on ways of h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

discussions of Stal<strong>in</strong>'s speech <strong>in</strong> cell meet<strong>in</strong>gs. At this meet<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong><br />

cell directors were <strong>in</strong>structed to h<strong>and</strong>le <strong>the</strong>ir cell discussions so as to<br />

criticize <strong>the</strong> positions of <strong>the</strong> Trotsky opposition <strong>and</strong> thus to po<strong>in</strong>t up<br />

<strong>the</strong> correctness of Stal<strong>in</strong>'s positions. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>in</strong> our cell meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

we did not, <strong>the</strong>n, discuss <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese revolution from <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

of seek<strong>in</strong>g valid answers to press<strong>in</strong>g issues. The Party bureau's<br />

strategy was merely to support Stal<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> power struggle with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

CPSU <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern. This state of affairs did not sit well with<br />

most students at <strong>the</strong> university. It was a tragedy that <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />

revolution, <strong>in</strong>stead of be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> object of <strong>the</strong> best th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g of Party<br />

leaders, became a mere political football which <strong>the</strong>y used <strong>in</strong> contest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

one ano<strong>the</strong>r's leadership. In such factional struggles, of course, each<br />

contestant explores only <strong>the</strong> weak po<strong>in</strong>ts of his opponent, which he<br />

magnifies <strong>in</strong> an effort to discredit everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> opponent has to say;<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process, whatever validity <strong>the</strong>re might be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> opponent's<br />

arguments is drowned <strong>in</strong> a sea of vitriol. Not everyth<strong>in</strong>g Trotsky had<br />

to say was wrong, obviously. Nor was everyth<strong>in</strong>g Stal<strong>in</strong> had to say<br />

correct.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> cell to which I belonged at <strong>the</strong> university, I<br />

was among those who expressed dissatisfaction with Stal<strong>in</strong>'s discussion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> April 12, 1927, coup; <strong>and</strong> perhaps my attitudes may serve as a<br />

sample of student reactions. Stal<strong>in</strong> had ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong> coup<br />

should not be appraised as a "decl<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese revolution" <strong>and</strong><br />

that those who so appraised it were <strong>in</strong> fact "sid<strong>in</strong>g with Chiang Kaishek"<br />

<strong>and</strong> were <strong>in</strong> fact <strong>in</strong> favor of receiv<strong>in</strong>g Chiang back <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

Wuhan KMT. 9 I remember ask<strong>in</strong>g our cell director whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

April 12 coup, if it did not repre<strong>sen</strong>t a decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese revolution,<br />

repre<strong>sen</strong>ted an upsurge <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese revolution. He did not<br />

reply. So I pressed on. Stal<strong>in</strong> had said that <strong>the</strong> April 12 coup had<br />

resulted "<strong>in</strong> a partial defeat for <strong>the</strong> workers <strong>in</strong> a number of areas. But<br />

that is merely a partial <strong>and</strong> temporary defeat." 10 Was it <strong>the</strong> case, I<br />
