conspicuous. 3 They criticized <strong>the</strong> bureau of <strong>the</strong> Party branch <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
same destructive tones that o<strong>the</strong>r followers of <strong>the</strong> Second L<strong>in</strong>e used.<br />
The struggle aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Second L<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong>deed, revealed <strong>in</strong> all its<br />
stark gravity <strong>the</strong> lacerat<strong>in</strong>g divisions with<strong>in</strong> <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> late autumn of 1928. The bureau of <strong>the</strong> Party branch simply could<br />
not tolerate loss of control over <strong>the</strong> bureau of <strong>the</strong> CYC branch <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
university. In <strong>the</strong> first place, <strong>the</strong> state of affairs ran counter to <strong>the</strong><br />
basic organizational pr<strong>in</strong>ciple that was supposed to govern <strong>the</strong> relationship<br />
between <strong>the</strong> Party <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> CYC. The CYC, as an auxiliary<br />
Party organization, was supposed to act only <strong>in</strong> accordance with Party<br />
decisions. In <strong>the</strong> second place, <strong>the</strong> Hsi-men-Kao clique <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bureau<br />
of <strong>the</strong> CYC branch, because of sympathy for Trotskyism, was held<br />
responsible for <strong>the</strong> high percentage of Trotskyites among <strong>the</strong> CYC<br />
members at <strong>the</strong> university.<br />
In a general Party meet<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> university held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> autumn of<br />
1928, I made a major speech criticiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Hsi-men-Kao clique. I<br />
characterized its course as "vanguardism," because its defiance of Party<br />
leadership had been demonstrated by its <strong>in</strong>sistence that <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong><br />
bureau of <strong>the</strong> Party branch be reversed. After that, <strong>the</strong>y were known<br />
as "Vanguardists," <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y became an important component of <strong>the</strong><br />
Second L<strong>in</strong>e coalition. It was to weaken this Second L<strong>in</strong>e coalition<br />
that <strong>the</strong> university authorities, upon <strong>the</strong> recommendation of <strong>the</strong> bureau<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Party branch, began <strong>in</strong> October, 1928, to <strong>sen</strong>d <strong>the</strong> most troublesome<br />
members of <strong>the</strong> Second L<strong>in</strong>e coalition to Siberia, where <strong>the</strong>y<br />
worked at hard labor. Kao Ch'en-lieh, L<strong>in</strong> Ch'i-t'o, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs were<br />
among those <strong>sen</strong>t to Siberia. O<strong>the</strong>rs, such as Hsi-men Tsung-hua, were<br />
<strong>sen</strong>t back to Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year. 4<br />
THE "WORKER OPPOSITIONISTS" As PART OF THE SECOND LINE COALITION<br />
The Worker Opposition faction, headed by Li Chien-ju <strong>and</strong> Yu<br />
Tu-san, constituted <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> force of <strong>the</strong> Second L<strong>in</strong>e coalition. It<br />
could be said that <strong>the</strong> Li-Yu faction supplied <strong>the</strong> manpower for <strong>the</strong><br />
battle. Those who made up <strong>the</strong> faction were of work<strong>in</strong>g-class orig<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> came from Wuhan <strong>and</strong> Shanghai. Li Chien-ju, for example, was<br />
a much-honored hero of <strong>the</strong> three workers' upris<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> Shanghai <strong>in</strong><br />
1926 <strong>and</strong> 1927. Yu Tu-san had been an important activist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wuhan<br />
workers' movement. As illiterates, both l<strong>in</strong>guistically <strong>and</strong> politically,<br />
