Kaunas Santaka Valley Starts the First Workings‘ Project
An agreement on the integrated science, studies
and the sponsorship of the first investment project of
business valley Santaka has been signed in Kaunas
Technology University. The implementation of this
project has resulted in the establishment of worldclass
National scientific researches and experimental
development (SRED) open-access on the territory of
Santaka valley in KTU campus in Kaunas. The centre
shall provide for the directional development of regular
chemistry, mechatronics, and energetic, informational
and communicational technologies, which are highly
significant for Lithuanian economy and comprise a solid
part of its export.
The value of the project – 117,257 million Litas
(approximately 100 million Litas is planned to be given
off the EU structural funds, and 17,6 million Litas – off
the budget resources). For the meantime, it is the biggest
investment in science development in Kaunas and one of
the biggest in Lithuania.
“A unique possibility opens up for Kaunas Technology
University, which has considerable experience in the
development of technologies, and lively connections with
business, to fall into the league of world-widely accepted
sphere authorities,” - said G. Steponavičius, minister of
education and science. – “The most talented scientists
and specialists from Lithuania and abroad could embody
their ideas in this centre. All this will be beneficial for
Kaunas and all Lithuania.”
The Spread of Science and Innovative Practice in Country‘s Farms
Gets Even Bigger Possibilities
Sponsorship for the activity area titled
“The Spread of the Scientific Knowledge and
Innovative Practice in the Field of Land and
Forest Economy Activity and Agricultural
Product Processing” of the measure determined
in the Lithuanian Rural Development Plan of
2007-2013 (RDP) titled “Activity of Vocational
Training and Informing” has been increased
from 12 million Litas to 22 million Litas.
The sponsorship will be given for equipping
demonstrative tests (to implement, supervise and
demonstrate) in farmer‘s or forest manager‘s
farms, organizing seminars, outdoor days and
other informative activities, and spreading the
scientific knowledge and innovative practice.
The means of organization, administration
and spread of these events will be paid in full
by the resources of the European Agriculture
Fund for Rural Development. Science and study
institutions and (or) their associations, uniting the

carried out in the SRED centre by creating new active
substances intended for medicinal preparations. The
scientists will be searching for the ways of cleaning
water, polluted with heavy metal. The technologies will
be created, allowing the indication of various breaches in
constructions, the development of clever home computer
and other innovative ideas.
“I believe, that this investment will serve its purpose,” -
said KTU rector Prof. R. Šiaučiūnas. – “Perfect conditions
for scientific researches, higher studies, effective science
and business collaboration will be established here.
However, the most important thing is that the centre
will provide for the attractive work places for the most
talented of our youth. High-level laboratories, equipped
with all the necessary facilities, will motivate the young
scientists to realize their scientific ambitions in Lithuania
rather than abroad.”
Upon approval of the investment project, the first
stage of the SRED centre development will begin – a
building of modern scientific laboratories will rise in
Kaunas. Later on, the necessary infrastructure and the
open-access laboratories will be installed.
The foundation of SRED centre is only one of the
Santaka valley projects in Kaunas. In the short run, it is
planned to start the foundation of an innovative centre of
pharmaceutical technologies, to create Future Energetics
centre and implement other projects.

The final beneficiaries are the farmers, their
partners, farm‘s workers and other natural or
legal persons, working in the field of land and

The aims of the activity sphere of the
aforementioned measure are – to increase
the competitive ability of the land and forest
economy by strengthening human resources
and installing progressive technologies and
innovations, and; to spread scientific knowledge
and innovations of land and forest economy,
agriculture products processing in farmer‘s farm
or agricultural company.
