Fragile Art of Glass
A glass painter Vytautas Janulionis was born in Klaipėda and has studied at Estonian (Talinas)
National Art Institute (now - academy), pursuing the speciality of glass. When he came back
to Lithuania, the artist began to work in Vilnius Art Academy, Kaunas Faculty of Art, where
he continues to serve as a docent of Glass Department up to now. The artist, who has finished
artistic glass studies in Estonia, has brought innovative glass art ideas, Scandinavian glass school
experience and has gained a wider view of nowadays glass art, which have reflected in both his
own works and tasks, formulated to his students. Since 1988, Vytautas Janulionis is a member of
Lithuanian Artists’ Union. He presents his works in personal and republican exhibitions both in
Lithuania and abroad.
This is what an art critic, Doc., Dr. Raimonda Simanaitienė says of the artist’s oeuvre: “In
the beginning, Vytautas Janulionis was creating decorative, utility-like vases, whereas now the
painter works in the areas of artistic (plastic accents, sculptures) and interior glass. Both threedimensional
and dimensional artist’s works are characterized by the moderation, subtle subjects
and well-thought, laconic plastic expression. Subtle and nature-inspired subjects of his works are
frequently expressed by painting on glass or stained glass technique methods. In artist’s oeuvre,
the tune of artistic expression means (optics of nuanced coloration, bright colour and darkness,
graphic picture, glass optics) creates a specific aesthetics of his works“.
