Why it is Easier to Breathe in Suvalkija

a map of directorate domains hangs in the office of
Šakiai forest supervisor. to tell the truth, it is not that
unusual – you could miss such visual accent only in
the minority of forest supervisors’ offices. But what is
particular about that one in Šakiai is that you can see very
clearly that forest area of the directorate territory reaches
only about a quarter and stands noticeably behind the
average of the republic (forested territory of the region –
24.8 percent, forested territory of Lithuania – 32 percent),
and that bigger forest arrays are segregated in the north
and east of the directorate.
how can one possibly farm in such case? it takes
time only to wheel from one side to the other… how
many roads are needed and how much petrol, and, look,
while carrying some balks, you may scrape the land of a
farmer.
“our infrastructure is developed well enough, servitude
roads are singled out, but, surely, not everything may be
placed within the legal relations. sometimes it fells out
that you have to drive through the fields. Yet, we are not
striking through the plants, are we? We get along with the
farmers nicely too,” the supervisor sigitas tamošaitis does
not dramatize the situation.
Despite of being quite scattered, the forest array,
supervised by the directorate, is not too scarce: it covers
over 25 thousand hectares. the state forests, managed by
the directorate, are divided into four groups and subgroups.
Each forest group is attributed a particular farming
objective and regime. annually, the directorate recovers
over 200 hectares of forests by the saplings grown in the
Lekėčiai nursery-garden; for the recovery and planting of
forests it plants over 620 thousand of main (pines, spruces,
oaks, birches, black alders) and other species of seedlings
and saplings.
the directorate recovers 220 hectares of forests,
mainly by the saplings from the Lekėčiai nursery-garden;
raises 350-400 hectares of undergrowth. Such supervision
allows cutting approximately 90 thousand solid cubic
meters (SCM) per year. 30-35 thousand SCM per year are
cut solely during the forest cultivation and sanitary cuts.
Do the clients remain indebted to the foresters during
this hardship?
“We are particularly taking care that there would be
no overdue debts. Looking at who our main customers
are, one will see that they are the same as in all Lithuania
– UAB Juodeliai and Girių Bizonas, who fulfilled their
obligations to everyone very precisely last year, order
for wood panel production. We signed new contracts in
December; the prices rose by 6 percent. True, we will
only get one percent of these, because last year seimas

additional compulsory 5-percent charge, to be paid by
directorates into the state budget in accordance to the
procedure laid down by the government, for their income
from the sold raw wood and uncut forests. and yet, the
facts that the demand is increasing and the wood becomes
more saleable are delighting.

Due to its protected plants, Šakiai Directorate is
thought to be one of the ecologically cleanest territories
throughout the country. Forests in the protected territory
cover 8190 hectares or 21 percent of the area of all forests
of the directorate; 3845 hectares or 47 percent of all the
protected territories within the directorate is composed of
national parks and all reserve forests. all in all, the charm
of primeval nature is protected by seven national reserves
and one sanctuary. on the territory of the directorate,
there are 124 hectares of genetic reserves, 334 hectares
of woodland key habitats, Natura 2000 territories and
areas, important for bird protection. Forest supervisor
