Modern Sculptures of Traditional Lithuanian Art
While still studying in M. K. Čiurlionis Art School (now the National
M. K. Čiurlionis Art Gymnasium), I have decided to link my creative life
to sculpture. At National Institute of Fine Arts (now Vilnius Academy
of Arts) I chose to study wood sculpture. Why? I was attracted by the
warmth of the traditional Lithuanian material, by the substantial cultural
heritage of our land and the attachment to ordinary, yet real values.
Huge impact on the formation of my creative stylistics was made by the
individuality of such Lithuanian sculptors as Prof. K. Bogdanas, Prof. B.
Vyšniauskas, Prof. J. Kėdainis, Prof. G. Jokūbonis, P. Mazūras, by their
knowledge and experience.
Lately, I mainly work on small-format figural mahogany and recently
discovered balsa wood sculptures. I am particularly keep on the heritage
of traditional Lithuanian art and its links to the nowadays. In my works,
I try to combine the old Lithuanian traditions of carving and the modern
art tendencies.
I believe that my works in the field of wood sculpture shall be a
somewhat contribution towards the continuity of the traditional
Lithuanian art.
- Vilmantas Adamonis
“A distinctive stylization, eye-catching fragments of tarsia and
colorific polychromy, directly indicating the folksy nature, provides the
woodees with the right to exist within the map of the Lithuanian art.
As if they constantly remind us that if we fail to be like children, we
shall never enter the Kingdom of Heaven; that simplicity and sincerity
are still valuables as well; that haziness, which overwhelms while
looking at round eyes of a woodee, is traditionally typical Lithuanian
feature, which should rather be cherished than oppressed. The works of
Vilmantas Adomonis, based on own and foreign traditions rather than
on innovations, force us to remember something that was long-forgotten:
kindness and simplicity.”
