them, they regained the divine light. Joyfully fol<br />

lowing it, they found their God in the lowly guise of an<br />

infant. They contemplated Him, adored Him, prayed<br />

Him to accept their gifts, and then went forth from<br />

Him, wholly transformed.<br />

During this Octave the Church fixes our attention<br />

wholly on the mystery which she set before us on the<br />

Feast itself. Thus each day, the priest says the same<br />

Mass, and in the Office, the same formulas invite medi<br />

tation on the circumstances and the consequences of<br />

this mystery.<br />

On the Sunday within the Octave the Church tells<br />

us how, when He was twelve years of age, Jesus appeared<br />

in the midst of the doctors of the law in the Temple<br />

at Jerusalem, where He manifested His superhuman<br />

knowledge and wisdom. This manifestation followed<br />

an act of obedience to the prescriptions of the Jewish<br />

Law : Jesus had gone to Jerusalem with Mary and Joseph,
